Recognize this? Media outlets refer to it as “pink slime.”
Chances are, you’ve consumed generous amounts of it. Last December, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, and Burger King decided to stop serving it.
Unfortunately, the beefy goo will continue to be served to our public school students after the USDA reportedly purchased 7 million pounds for consumption. Of course, it doesn’t appear in its slimy form when restaurants or schools deliver it to the consumer. Instead, it arrives looking like ground beef—which, technically speaking, it is.
Whip Up A Batch Of Pink Slime At Home!
And how do you make Pink Slime? Pare away all the edible elements of a cow. Take what’s left—the intestines, connective tissue, and other beef scraps—and place it into a gigantic centrifuge to separate the “beef” from the fat.
Now add ammonium hydroxide. What??? Yes, ammonium hydroxide. Because the parts are susceptible to E. coli and salmonella contamination, the mystery meat must be soaked in ammonia in order to (hopefully) kill any bacteria. Drain the ammonia and you get the pinkish sludge in the photo above.
Finally, run the “meat” through a meat grinder to give you that ground beef appearance.
Recently, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver brought this process to light in his television program. To see a disturbing video clip of his explanation, click here.
Here’s the scary part: The processing plant that produces the “slime,” Beef Products Inc., estimates its ammonia-based product is used in 70 percent of the ground beef sold in the United States. Yikes!!
Lest you decide to opt for something other than red meat, know that similar processes are done with pork and chicken to produce hot dogs, sausages, and chicken nuggets.
Until recently, the dregs from cows, pigs, and chickens weren’t considered fit for human consumption. Dog food at best.
Hungry?
Me neither.
You Can Whip Up Some Pink Slime For Your Soul, Too!
Ever stopped to consider that we can easily do the same thing with our souls? We can bypass the pink slime-based foods, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly–and yet starve our souls. Worse yet, we can feed them the equivalent of spiritual pink slime: me-focused, flesh-feeding goo.
My goal isn’t to give you an all-inclusive list of what to not to feed your soul. But this is important…
Limit your intake to foods with little or no nutritional value and your health will begin to deteriorate. You need nutrition.
Eat healthy but ingest a trace of arsenic at one meal, and your body probably won’t notice (please don’t try this at home!). But regular doses of just a trace will poison your body–even when eating healthy.
We are what we eat. And over time, what we consume for our souls affects us.
Some stimuli can be fairly innocuous: news, politics, talk shows, television shows, certain kinds of music. But let’s be honest, they offer little or no nutritional value to our souls.
On the other hand, some stimuli certainly aren’t innocuous: news, politics, talk shows, television shows, certain kinds of music, depending on the content.
Seventeen days into Lent, this is a great opportunity to evaluate what we’re consuming.
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them.
John 6:53–56 (NIV)
Michael co-pastors The Neighborhood Church in Littleton, Colorado with Eugene Scott. For Lent, he has eliminated sports talk and classic rock from his diet.
ew!,…but so true!
Lulled as we are into acceptance and acquiescence by the familiar and commonly experienced things around us, it almost never spontaneously occurs to us to seriously question; look elsewhere (or deeper); search on a quest to uncover hidden/concealed issues or meanings, or discover new and unexplored territories; examine so as to see more clearly the actual nature of things,…No, simply, unquestioningly, in the peaceful “bliss” of ignorance and naivete, we prefer to remain undisturbed in the comfortableness of our waking slumber, “trusting” that at bottom this nice ole world “has our back” basically,…
It can often take a rather “rude awakening” to jar our consciousness and prepare us to seriously begin sorting things out. Sad is the day (but very very important!) when we personally discover that “all that glitters is not gold,” and that we can be tempted (and fooled) to play with danger. And, in fact, some of the very very glittery looking stuff can actually kill you. Some ingenues don’t even make it through the initial confrontations with the disguised evil come-ons. Some wear scars, but manage to escape, suddenly much older & hopefully proportionally wiser.
When we learn about things like “pink slime,” it should help us to realize that, actually, the world doesn’t “love us” or care about us as real personal vulnerable individuals nearly as much as it “pretends” to. Influence us, use us, control us, suck us in,…yes, definitely, these are the main things on the world’s planned agenda for us,…and it begins with the “innocent” cartoon rituals that seek to invade our really true innocence, “lovingly” holding hands with us from almost “Day 1,” weaving its pervasive network into our souls, just as familiar and comfortable as an old shoe.
It’s a Truly Great Day when we finally “let go” of this suggestive and invasive, clinging vine-ish, “life partner,” consciously and intentionally, from our own end. If we refuse to agree with it, go along with it, it loses ALL power over us,…and we are finally “free” to discover so much more that really IS real and that really does CARE.
True Love waits for us, until WE let go of the presumptuous false loves and ruthless imposters,…and when we do, we’ll see that “it was there all the time.”
Romans 1:18-23
18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.”

Revelation 3:17-20
17 “Because thou sayest, ‘I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;’ and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 “I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
20 “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.”
and a real beauty/promise,…
Isaiah 49:13-26
13 “Shout for joy, you heavens;
rejoice, you earth;
burst into song, you mountains!
For the LORD comforts his people
and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
14 “But Zion said, ‘The LORD has forsaken me,
the Lord has forgotten me.’
15 “ ‘Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
16 ” ‘See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me.
17 ” ‘Your children hasten back,
and those who laid you waste depart from you.
18 ” ‘Lift up your eyes and look around;
all your children gather and come to you.
As surely as I live,’ declares the LORD,
‘you will wear them all as ornaments;
you will put them on, like a bride.
19 “ ‘Though you were ruined and made desolate
and your land laid waste,
now you will be too small for your people,
and those who devoured you will be far away.
20 ” ‘The children born during your bereavement
will yet say in your hearing,
‘This place is too small for us;
give us more space to live in.’
21 ” ‘Then you will say in your heart,
‘Who bore me these?
I was bereaved and barren;
I was exiled and rejected.
Who brought these up?
I was left all alone,
but these—where have they come from?’”
22 “This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
‘See, I will beckon to the nations,
I will lift up my banner to the peoples;
they will bring your sons in their arms
and carry your daughters on their hips.
23 ” ‘Kings will be your foster fathers,
and their queens your nursing mothers.
They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground;
they will lick the dust at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the LORD;
those who hope in me will not be disappointed.’
24 “Can plunder be taken from warriors,
or captives be rescued from the fierce?
25 “But this is what the LORD says:
‘Yes, captives will be taken from warriors,
and plunder retrieved from the fierce;
I will contend with those who contend with you,
and your children I will save.
26 ” ‘I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;
they will be drunk on their own blood, as with wine.
Then all mankind will know
that I, the LORD, am your Savior,
your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.’ ”
Joel 2 (edited)
1 “Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand; …
11 “And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?
12 “Therefore also now, saith the LORD, TURN YE EVEN TO ME WITH ALL YOUR HEART, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
13 “And REND YOUR HEART, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: FOR HE IS GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL, slow to anger, and of great kindness, … . …
15 “Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly:
16 “Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet.
17 “Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, ‘SPARE THY PEOPLE, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?’
18 “Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people.
19 “Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
20 “But I will remove far off from you the northern army, and will drive him into a land barren and desolate, with his face toward the east sea, and his hinder part toward the utmost sea, … .
21 “FEAR NOT, O land; be glad and rejoice: for the LORD will do great things.
22 “Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field: for the pastures of the wilderness do spring, for the tree beareth her fruit, the fig tree and the vine do yield their strength.
23 “BE GLAD then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.
24 “And the floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
25 “AND I WILL RESTORE TO YOU THE YEARS THAT THE LOCUST HATH EATEN, the cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
26 “And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and PRAISE THE NAME OF THE LORD YOUR GOD, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
27 “And ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else: and my people shall never be ashamed.
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT UPON ALL FLESH; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
29 “And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
30 “And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
31 “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the LORD come.
32 “And it shall come to pass, that WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD SHALL BE DELIVERED: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.”
Such powerful promises,…
Jeremiah 31:3 “The Lord appeared from of old to me … saying, ‘Yes, I HAVE LOVED YOU WITH AN EVERLASTING LOVE; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.’ ”
Truly, there is NOTHING in this world — (especially considering the perishable and ultimately temporary nature of things) — that compares to the steadfast and faithful LOVE of the LORD!
Wow!!
“Food” for contemplati0n. I watched the video and thought it was very well produced, the message loud and clear.
I’m a vegetarian, now year #17. Decided this route as a stewardship move, cholesterol, weight management, all out of wack. It worked and I am healthy at age 71 with a few orthopedic, non “pink slime” related, aches and pains. “Pink slime” is all around us in the media, hurled at our children, and they have little resource to sort through it. The expressions on the faces in the video, both adult and child, were of wrapped attention, horror, disbelief.
Do we go back to gathering nuts, seeds, pure vegan lifestyles, or just moderate “pink slime” intake? I begin every day with “electronic slime” on the computer, reading Scripture, along with a terrific devotional that comes via cyberspace from my wife’s pastor DeeDee Thompson; it’s called Treasures in the Rain and it is just what I need to launch the day with strong, applicable, non-slimy stimuli, God’s Word.
